Simple Game
by void+
Location: void+
Artist(s): Satoshi UCHIUMI
Date: 11 Nov - 10 Dec 2011

void+ presents a solo exhibit featuring Satoshi Uchimi. This exhibition titled “Simple Game,” paintings are changed every week to introduce a total of seven new paintings.

Paintings by Uchimi, who consistently claim, “The beauty of a painting is derived from the beauty of the paint,” consist of dots in various colors, stippled onto canvases with brushes and cotton swabs to produce unlimited range of colors from the balance and relations between overlapping colors. Known for producing site-specific paintings unique to each setting, Uchimi studies the space where his work is to be displayed, meticulously selecting the canvas and method of display to the point of considering the atmosphere the viewer will experience when walking into the space. As a result, the viewer not only sees the painting, but becomes immersed in the flamboyant colors they experience physically.

During this solo exhibit “Simple Game,” paintings will be changed four times. According to Uchimi, void’s white cube of only 7 square meters is comparable to the inside of a human head. Within this simple and blank space, paintings created from using canvases of unprecedented shapes exhibited urges viewers to question conventional forms of paintings while offering numerous opportunities to experience the paintings. One of Uchimi’s paintings are distorted while another painting is repositioned to create numerous versions. His third painting utilizes a unique, deep, black and high matières that is unusual for his work, while his fourth painting freely explores installation positions, with all paintings questioning the relationship between colors, paintings, space and viewers. How is color defined? What are paintings? Please come and physically enjoy the paintings of Uchimi, a pioneer who explores new realms of paintings.
