Tsung-Fan Lin believes the modern man is consumed by this fashionable need for speed. Determined to accomplish more in less time, he has thus grew less and less aware of his individuality, choice and rhythm,
and has become confused and exhausted. In fact, the modern society’s pace of life which stresses on
efficiency and competition has caused massive collective anxiety: thus, following logically, is a kind of
nostalgic imagination, like the notion of slow food and LOHAS (lifestyles of health and sustainability),
promoting a simple and slow paced lifestyle and romanticizing places afar, as if traveling, leaving the “here” is the only escape from reality.
In his latest show “Roaming Heart”, using succinct lines and soft colors, Lin paints picture after picture of Japanese architecture, streets and sceneries. Representing himself with a kitty or dog, these comfortable/lazy/agile looking animals are wandering the beautiful sceneries for the artist, completing these slow paced journeys one by one and enjoying the tranquil, timeless moments in life. To Lin, these images are not about conveying reaching some desire-free stage of nirvana, but about interpreting a peaceful, careless state; he hopes, also, that his work can inspire the viewer to experience the balance of body, heart and soul.
