Storyteller
by Fish Art Center
Location: Fish Art Center
Artist(s): LIN Kewei
Date: 5 Oct - 30 Oct 2011

The story insists on discussing things of the past, but in a way such that even though they have ended, they are retained. This has less to do with recall/memory, and is more closely related to a kind of co-existence, the co-existence of the past and present. - John Berger.

This year's works are a continued development of the last exhibition "that year", Ke Wei's work has always been filled with elements of memories and time. Whether it is digging into the joys of his childhood or recording moments of leisure in the present, these processes become engraved memories in the passing of time. For Ke Wei they are memories, for others they are stories.

The works are filled with elements of stories - the work itself is a story, or is actually a story telling person, the viewers are at the same time audiences, listening to a story. A story is a conversation, a message, a vessel to convey ideas, the story may be quiet and moving, perhaps filled with ups and downs, but the important thing is the people telling the stories and the ones listening to the stories. This is not a unilateral transfer, but a kind of "face to face, two-way communication."

Why is it a face to face two-way communication? If we recall the experience of listening to stories as children – while listening to the story, you somehow got in the story, you appear amongst the storyteller's words; you are no longer alone, you have been associated with the story.

Each story told forms a unique process. Even the same story would appeal to each person somewhat differently - when you are listening, and also when you are telling.

Story arrives in the mind, swarms the heart, not to be kept a secret but to be told, same with painting. "Storyteller" is a starting point of a discussion that Ke Wei has thrown – he’s a storyteller and a story listener; the people listening to the story will also become storytellers. A story transcends space and time, half of its soul is from the storyteller’s desire to tell the story, the other from people listening to it, how the story is projected/received.

The recurring characters in Ke Wei’s work reflect not only his own emotions and is not a one directional transfer of feelings, they seek to create a scenario for viewers/audiences to enter; while looking at Ke’s images, one can try to project oneself onto the characters and story and experience the story listening, storytelling and story development.
