Traces No. 9 (2008) by SUN Yao
150 x 180 cm
Oil on canvas

SUN Yao, in recent years, has been focus on exploring the relationship between reality which one notices & reality which one realizes.  SUN Yao believes that in this information technology era, we are so used to equalizing the reality of nature to some kind of virtual reality generated by certain visual media.   We no longer desire for the meaning of what is true to us or how we feel for it.  Truth, quickly makes visual information code simplified. Just like news reports, it is not necessary for readers to guess what behind what’s written or the connection in-between paragraphs.  It seems we are surrounded by visual code and turning to be lost.

SUN Yao’s new works will bring the importance of painting back to painting itself again.  He uses human faces as a theme of expression, by presenting us a mixture of deconstructed & then re-constructed faces, to emphasize the loss of ability to be able to determine in today’s multi-media society.  By painting the blurry faces, it shows the objectivity of the artist.  He twisted the outlook of the faces up & down, painted brightly or darkly.  Up close, it makes one feel as if he has walked into a virtual space, strange as yet familiar.  As if entering an ancient or future world, or some mysterious outer space.  Take a closer look, it reminds one of those computer generated images.  Virtual digital images & objectivity stand separate & also get overlapped at certain point.  It actually reflects how people feel about their world now.  On SUN Yao’s canvases, the faces are staring or observing at audiences, as if they are reminding audiences to self-criticise.  How much do we really know about the world we live in?  How much do we really know about ourselves?  The world we live in may not be the world we think we know about.  The important thing is that we should look at our world with honesty & purity, so that we could keep our independence when observing & accepting this world.
