SHY GONG biography | artworks | events

Shy Gong, a Chinese architect raised in America, returned back Taiwan in 1989, the year of Tien-An-Men Incident happened in China. Initially, he was overwhelmed by the instability as well as the vivacity of the society; thus drawn, he began his art creations on the national faith. Shy Gong excels at observing and presenting the intricate changes of social spirits in varied times and spaces, and converting these phenomena into installation and performing art forms, sensitively manifesting the ambiguity of social flux and conflicts. His works were permeated with religious temperament, often presented in the form of a temple and practicing religious rituals. The first stage of every work was referred to as "birth", requiring the viewers' participation in the rituals to complete the course of "birth". Shy Gong believes that the creation of a culture calls for the faith, and essentially the faith is incumbent upon the social collective romance.
