Conscious Folly

Date: 8 Sep - 21 Oct 2012

AM Space is glad to announce of The Conscious Folly, Young Curator Cooperation Project 2012, which been on 8 September 2012. One thing should be reminded is that there is actually no "folly" whatsoever in the exhibition.

I take down how the "folly" happened in am art space on September 8, 2012.

“Folly! Folly! It’s conscious, unprovoked and destroyed folly. This is the most difficult fault to be hidden in all faults XX may make.” Founding something really stupid doubtfully, one hesitates inside but runs directly to this thing—It will be a relieve after having done this silly thing.

Double Fly Brothers will gather in Shanghai separately from Beijing and Hangzhou, as they care very much about the excellent artworks in a warehouse. They were produced by fine artists who faded into oblivion and remain forgotten in complete darkness. Double Fly Art Center says they cannot just sit but do nothing. They then swear to make as much effort as possible by fighting for opportunities that these works should have deserved. Between 17:00 and 19:00 on the opening day, AM Space is planning to live broadcast the entire process of this extraordinary achievement. Will they succeed? Will these legendary artworks be eventually released?

Tang Dixin is presumably making an absolute project to cool himself down in the scotching summer. From "Lying on Railroad", "Down to the River with Stone”, to “I Will Be Back Soon and Flying”, one finds it hard to resist the speculation over his desires to approach to dangers and limits of human body: does he enjoy higher tolerance of horror and pain than any other ones? Well, this time the artist no longer does "follies", and decide to simply enjoy the wonderful coolness.

In his statement, Liu Xinyi says that "he is interested in political experience in contemporaneous time and keen on the observation about its logical dilemma as well as the creative exploration into political common sense." If his solo exhibition “Agent Lin” in White Space Beijing this June presented us with an investigation report from an alien space into politics on earth, what progress has the inspector made recently? In this September, a couple of new materials outlining contemporary political and international relations will be completed. To catch a glimpse of the everydayness which seem so insignificant, it’s actually not so easy.

Song Ta, whose parents are civil servants, comes from Leizhou. He created several works related to civil servant some time ago. He got into all aspects of civil servants in his individual way and finally found out some exclusive materials for us, like the law of the civil servants’ image, their secrets, etc. Thought not became one of the civil servants, he has already been a civil servant in spirit and emotion for a long time. This year, he voted top ten excellent doctors for the Beijing Imperial Academy Hutong to serve the people. This time, he will share us with a great case which may help Guangzhou to protect the city public safety.

Artist Song Ta said, "I discovered a section of the Guangzhou Metro running under the Pearl Rever that is particularly close to the water surface. If some terrorist care to make the precise calculations and set off sxplosives at this particular section, the whole body of water of the Pearl River would flood the entire metro line like when one floods a rat hole.I found this idea exceptionally twisted and horrifying,so I made a short video-The Person Deep Down in the River. The video tells this horrifying tale and I sent it to Mr.Wan Qingliang,Mayor of Guangzhou City. A weight was lifted off my heart after I sent the video, and I believe the Mayor is capable of handling everything. This was a horror movie made for the Mayor alone."

Ma Yongfeng, who has already been professional in photography and video art, launched an institution named Forget Art, which based on the Guerrilla type intervention. Then he turned to another way to continue his creation. On one hand, he keeps his amateurish creative state, conducting a series of micro intervention using scene as a medium. On the other hand, Ma pays more attention to the whole environment, achieving some kind of independent sociality. Based on the disaster happened in Beijing recently, he will create a pattern of ceremony in the special basement of AM Art Space, through repeatedly testing.

Jiang Peng always weights the “language, subject, and power”. Before our talking, he emphasizes the meaning of the representative of “I”, and then our talk can start. And he mentioned that each “I” is always different. No one knows what it will be after he overturns the power of language. Jiang is a father of a two-year-old child. He gradually discovered that the formation of the subject will and “imprison” through accompanying his child cognize this world. In the exhibition, Jiang designed a word game named Word Search, which people can play only under the premise of identifying some words. The relationship between the searching and knowledge will be questioned when people found the answer in the game.

Liao Fei has a doubt on material: Is material just simply material? Does material really have nothing to do with consciousness or anything else? Liao experienced the beauty of lightness in a simple reasoning of Husserl that everything belongs to a whole system. He said, “I’m afraid material is much lighter and more graceful than our imagination.” In the exhibition hall, he inserted a tube on top of a pile of briquette, and then the light turns on.

“Folly! Folly! Conscious and unprovoked!”

One thing should be reminded before too late: the exhibition will be full of silly things. Over care, futility, hurt, censure and flaw is everywhere. However, looking for the reasons and process of these stupid things can always make us closer to the Chinese contemporary than other safe materials. The Conscious Folly is coming soon; let’s pay our respects to the predecessor who did the folly things without hesitation, and also to those who are busy with foolish things. If you meet any artist who splashes sunlight while glows with foolishness, you can tell him without hesitation, “Oh, you are such a fool! But thank you for being a fool! ”.
