The Mysterious Girl, Amane
by Plum Gallery
Location: Plum Gallery
Artist(s): Hiromi YAMAGUCHI
Date: 15 Oct - 30 Nov 2010

Plum gallery will present a copper plate engraving exhibition by Japanese artist Hiromi Yamaguchi from 15th Oct. to 30th Nov. Hiromi Yamaguchi’s daughter Amane suffered from severe cerebral palsy when she was born. Hiromi used to be a teacher in elementary school and eventually quit her job to take care of her daughter.

After deciding to face the lowest point in her life, Hiromi began to realize her many artistic and creative aspiration. She started to take lessons in copper plate engraving in order to record different moments of her daughter. She fell in love with the complicated making process since it reflected life. She held several solo exhibitions in Osaka and published 3 painting books related to her daughter.

“My daughter Amane is severely handicapped, unable to take care of herself, and has difficulty to breathe as well. But her eyes shone with eagerness to be alive and her cry expressed her strong will. Though her hands and legs, which she never used, were crooked and bent like a grapevine, how beautiful a being she was!” Hiromi said.

Amane died in 2000 when she was 19, and Hiromi still continued her painting. Hiromi thinks she has never been able to capture enough of Amane’s beauty with her drawing.

The opening party of Hiromi’s exhibition will be hold on 16th Oct. We’ll invite two young American cellists, Paul Antony-Levine and Rebecca Wade, to present a 1 hour performance. Two classically-trained musicians breaking the norm and redefining genre as they present songs of love and loss.
