Eleven Continents
by Fine Arts College of Shanghai University 99 Creative Center
Location: 99 Creative Center
Artist(s): FENG Jiayi, Stephanie
Date: 20 Nov - 24 Nov 2010

‘Eleven Continents’ -- the name of the album by RF & Lili De La Mora, the vocalist. I like the way the Chinese put it – Eleven Fantasies. This exhibition took the same name of it – the reason? Simply – she was child born in November – she loves travelling, and…she is an adventurer.
Among the total 41 photographs you will see today, 40 are HDR (High Dynamic Range). She first heard of it from an English boy from Flickr, who always wears a “Ushanka”, a Russian fur cap with ear flaps (or perhaps better known to the Chinese: the “Lei Feng Hat”). One of the last summer days in Newcastle, they creeped into an abandoned hospital in the suburb, to be inspired. The English boy said to her, ‘the moment before you click, it’s the reality, the moment after it, it’s fantasy…’
A month later, she left Newcastle for London, looking for ‘fantasy’…
When the most beautiful season of a year in London is gone, and on the second day after her 24th birthday, the adventure begins…
She started her first job on the Caribbean, where there is no sky, there is sea; where there are no tourists, there are crew members – it was a real life, but in fantasy.
The spring of 2009, on the plane from San Juan, she was listening to “Eleven Continents” and there came the film of snapshots. The girl…well… Bruce Davidson’s words would well describe her of that moment: “I’ve been thinking about the seas, the waves, the laughs, the beats, and the quietness. The night, the star, the smile, the sweet bitterness …”

About Stephanie

Born on a sunny beautiful November morning in the 1980s, and she went off to a university in the UK on a lovely August in 2006, dedicated to International Multimedia Journalism at Newcastle University. She sees photography as a hobby, that’s all. What was surprising is her first job ever was photographer! From London to Miami, and then San Juan…in the East Caribbean Sea, making herself at home at Serenade of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International, she spent six months on the sea. Then, she took her Barney, the Teddy bear given by a customer on the cruise. In fact after travelling around the globe, she came all the way from San Juan, Chicago, Vancouver and when they finally got to Shanghai, she whispered into Barney’s ear: “Welcome home!”
