Shanghai University Art Center proudly presents "Works by Shen Chen", a show curated by Wu Liang. There 16 pieces of most recent paintings will be displayed in this exhibition which manifests the continuation of the spirits of abstract ink painting. "In his works, Shen Chen expresses not eloquence but silence. His lines, almost clear as the traces of running streams, unveil the stillness of lute strings that has consolidated time and create a space that remains free from histories, signs, symbols, and verification. We fall into a void, find ourselves bathed in a beam of serenity from the heart of the tableau, get onto a new threshold, and look forward to nothingness. There is no answer left here. Indeed, any answer to an answer has vanished. Nothingness is the beginning and end of everything. Yet, in Shen's works, this odyssey of infinitude is completed way before its commencement. Or, we may put it this way: the journey knows no stop itself, though it has been started countless times. On it, there is the absolute one, the absolute tranquility, the absolute nullification of the substantial." (Wu Liang) Shen Chen graduated in 1982 from Shanghai Academy of Theater and became of of most active avant-garde artists then. After obtained his master degree from Boston University in 1989 he settled down in New York since. His oeuvre artistic style contains multiple culture elements and combines with different philosophy and conceptual ideals.
