ShanghART is pleased to announce ‘On Paper’, a group exhibition of works on paper featuring YU Youhan, LI Shan, SHEN Fan, TANG Guo, XUE Song, JIN Weihong, WU Yiming, Armen Eloyan & XIANG Liqing. The show includes multiple works by each artist.

‘On Paper’ comprises a range of aesthetic styles and strategies depicted on paper within highly personal investigations into the abstract, the pictorial, and the personal. Expressive and chimerical visual rhetoric is rendered through the intimate practice of these diverse works on paper. The panorama of works presented indicates a spontaneous and immediate approach to representation and imagination.

Jin Weihong documents beauty and whimsy in her imaginative, meticulously crafted elegant series. Xue Song's narrative images capture passing fancies with sharp wit, reflecting upon the world around, especially focusing on contemporary Shanghai. Others extract from the unconscious, revealing internal worlds. Armen Eloyan's playfully cartoons meld dreams and nightmares, myth and memory. Wu Yiming characterizes the interplay of history, observation and tradition evident also in the work of Shen Fan; while Ding Yi, Tang Gui, Yu Youhan, and Xiang Liqing’s illustrations are held in strictly elegant and abstract patterns in highly individual aesthetic ways. As the artworks in ‘On Paper’ make evident, the intimate and immediate practice of works on paper offers a glimpse into individual perceptions of both physical and psychic reality.
