Maya Kramer’s work functions as a haunting antidote to the often hyperbolic and saccharine version of life portrayed in popular culture. Beginning from a concern for humanity’s precarious relationship to its environment, the artist uses surprising materials to render images from nature. In this most recent body of work, Ms. Kramer continues her exploration of coal as a medium, rending feathers and branches in coal and arranging them into various tableaux. Both foreboding and poetic these works speak to the vulnerable state of the natural world.
