Middle-aged Artists Group Show
by 99 Degree Art Center (Shanghai)
Location: 99 Degree Art Center
Artist(s): CHIU Hsien Te, Shyh Charng LO, LI Suntta
Date: 10 Apr - 2 May 2010

For the Chinese people, the changing tides of history have a growing impact from foreign cultures, and one result of these unique historical circumstances has been the emergence of a great number of outstanding artists from China. Artists from the middle generations of these historical eras are among the most representative.

Artists often reach their full capabilities around the age of 50 to 65, when the breadth of their life experience, vision, and outlook gives their thought new maturity and depth, so that these years often become their most richly creative period.

This exhibition introduces four artists whose individual styles show great potential for international development. Some have already spent significant periods working abroad; others have already won critical acclaim in overseas exhibitions. Representing the finest of Chinese art today, these are artists we cannot afford to overlook.

Chiu HsienTe
In his resulting work,he has transformed the traditional, straightforward approach to watercolor through the addition of a sensibility derived from the eastern ink-wash tradition.Chiu’s paintings feature colors with all the saturated intensity of oils, while at the same time he has expanded the limits of scale in watercolor paintings that often exceed 200 centimeters in size.Chiu’s individualistic style has been forged through years of effort and study, which have produced a unique combination of oil, watercolor, and ink-wash techniques with a strong eastern flavor and aesthetic.

Lo ShyhCharng
In Lo's works we hear the echo of his eternal pledge to nature. Lo realized that only by eliminating the dross and retaining the essentials could article come to reveal true feeling. He thus strives to derive simplicity from complexity, reducing his compositions to the purest colors and the most simplified scenic elements, and by so doing, he captures a sense of the beauty of purity and simplicity.

Li Suntta
Li acknowledges that his inspiration is derived from specific images he has seen; that is, from specific static or flowing picture images. His work finds its source in the products of today's contemporary culture, and frequently takes as its theme the relationship between clothing and the body, presenting new implications and insights that revolve around these ideas.

Jiang Zhixin
Jiang Zhixin's freely impressionistic paintings capture the bold, powerful spirit of China's great Northwest. One of the most energetic figures in the world of Chinese art, Jiang imbues his ink-wash paintings with the feel of these ageless landscapes in a uniquely appealing way, projecting their beauty of their vast expanses and their breadth and power.

Jiang merges tradition and modernity wonderfully in his paintings, where strong, clear rhythms emerge from the ink and brushstrokes to create the evocative tension of the works.
