Leo Gallery proudly announces the opening of ART IN SPACE @ Times Square Mall. ART IN SPACE involves several large-scale installation pieces that will transform the mall into an experience of optimism and enlightenment, with each work directing our senses upward. This special exhibit will be on display from Friday, June 25th until Monday, July 19th 2010. Leo Gallery is pleased to invite you for the cocktail reception on Friday, June 25th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Times Square, 99 Huaihai Zhong Road near Liu Lin Road.
In April, Leo Gallery embarked on our first collaboration with Times Square Mall to present an installation of Li Lei’s “18 Songs” series, suspending 18 abstract paintings within the mall’s 5-storey atrium. Following the success of that exhibit, Leo Gallery once again collaborates with Times Square Mall for an even more ambitious project involving artists Kum Chi Keung from Hong Kong, Qu Guangci from Beijing, Xu Hongfei from Guangzhou, and Zhang Ning from Shanghai.
Kum Chi Keung, a prolific and well-known installation artist in Hong Kong, will present three works, including Space for Lease, a rocket ship-inspired birdcage installation recognized as 2009’s Best of Year Artworks by Interior Design magazine.
Qu Guangci is a sculptor known for redefining the ideology of political sculpture. His re-envisioned Mao sculptures have been exhibited throughout the world, including New York. Most recently, his widely popular solo exhibit entitled Angel with a Mission was held at the Hong Kong Art Centre in conjunction with the Art HK art fair. Look for brightly tinted angels as you enter the main entrance.
Xu Hongfei is full of life and a sense of humor, traits that are reflected in his work. His works often feature full-figured women, full of optimism and flying forward as if chasing after all that life can offer. He has also been invited to create public sculpture works including Bobo Girl, a permanent installation in Beijing’s Olympic Village and Peanut – which in Chinese sounds like the word 'vigor'-- for the city of Guangzhou.
Zhang Ning, an emerging artist and former apprentice of Qu Guangci, will be exhibiting his sculpture Meeting Dongyuan Again in the piazza outside the main entrance of Times Square.
