KONG Mosha biography | artworks | events

A native of Shanxi Province, she graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, thereafter pursuing research in lacquer techniques in Japan. Currently based in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, Kong Mosha is an extremely active artist. Immediately after her departure from the Lacquer Craft Department of the Kyoto University of Art, she received important recognition in major competitions throughout the PRC for her sculptural creations of varying scale. Similar to her co-artists in this rapidly changing field, she has come to explore a wide range of possible material applications in creating new forms, which include either the ancient techniques used in the formation of sculptural images, such as Kanshitsu-made from a dry powder lacquer- to more modern synthetic materials. Kong Mosha considers herself primarily a lacquer artist whom expresses her vision through the differing use of materials in application. Her a priori medium remains lacquer itself, and she has undertaken the creation of artworks which incorporate Chinese shell and lacquer works upon which she has chosen to depict quotidian “mise-en-scenes” with a slight twist of her own design. Her works are ambiguous, and reveal their content and message after slow observation.
