Resonance - New Media Art Week
by Gallery Magda Danysz (MD Gallery)
Location: 18 Gallery
Date: 19 Sep - 24 Sep 2010

From September 18th to 24th, 2010, 18Gallery is glad to host the New Media Art Week. In the framework of this event, which is co-organized by VZW DE INVENTIE and 18 Gallery, supported by Shanghai eARTS, three projects will be organized; the new media exhibition Resonance, together with a lecture series, and the performance C.A.P.E. by CREW (Eric Joris) in the Belgian Pavillion, located on the site of the World Expo.

Magda Danysz as the director of the 18Gallery and curator Art Yan from Shanghai eARTS are glad to have invited Christophe de Jaeger (curator), Pieter Vermeulen (Assistant Curator) and Anouk De Clercq (artist) on the occasion of the Brussels Week to develop together an unprecedented program presenting a dialogue between selected Chinese artists and artists from Brussels.

For the Resonance show, the exhibition space will be restyled into a darkened, surrealistic laboratory in which different installations of Chinese and Belgian artists create an enchanting atmosphere. The space is sculpted by a series of corridors between the works. This scenography is realised by Tenfinger, a Brussels-based studio for exhibition design.

The ‘light’ component runs as a thread throughout the whole show, as the following examples illustrate. The video ‘Conductor’ by Anouk de Clercq shows us a lightning conductor with a small light in the middle of a darkening sky. The attention to the sky is reinforced in the work ‘Cloud.Data’ by Aaajiao (Xu Wenkai). ‘Box’ by Kris Verdonck/A Two Dogs Company confronts us with the strongest light in the world. Hans Op de Beeck’s ‘Location 1’ is a maquette of a nocturnal landscape, consisting of empty streets and lampposts gently illuminating the scenery. ‘Hi ! A world which is being bulit’ by Hu Jieming presents a huge construction on the Moon with logically response to the massive data real time generated on the internet world.

Different discussions with all partners resulted in the program Resonance, a crossing point between plastic arts, music, theatre and technology. A multidisciplinary attitude and the use of innovative technology directed the selection of participating artists.
