Location: 18 Gallery
Artist(s): YANG Yong Liang
Date: 8 Sep - 20 Oct 2011

18 Gallery is proud to introduce in a worldwide exclusive premiere the new series “The Peach Colony " by Yang Yongliang. In a whole new body of work, never seen before, the many possible  interpretations for the series bring a new look and visual experience.

Placed under the theme of a Lost Paradise, the exhibition is of significance to the artist who aims at bringing out the spirit of the ancient world, as the "Taoyuan discipline". The simple dress of the ancient literati placed in a realistic and modern environment makes it fictional fantasy scene. There is a vague sense of time, space, and cultural boundaries. Here the costume is not a simple literary cultural elements, but a spiritual symbol of human path and evolution in life.

The "Taoyuan discipline" is an artistic form based on what could be called a "mirage city landscape", mixing different viewing experiences, quietness and disorder.

In each of the artwork of the new series are carefully hidden a lot of metaphorical  elements. The emergence of these elements break the quiet and peaceful atmosphere, creating suddenly a tension, suggesting that the conflict and the contradictions arising in a new world.

Through the choice of a special subject and his amazing digital collage technique, Yang Yongliang transports the viewer into a fascinating dream world. The characters seem to float in an unreal landscape.

Having studied traditional art with the famous artist Yang Yang, Yang Yongliang revolutionizes classical Chinese art. Yang Yongliang’s works revisit calligraphy and traditional ink painting while incorporating contemporary technology. The landscapes created by Yang Yongliang are actually composed by numerous and tiny photographs of skyscrapers, motorway and avenues. This way, the artist delicately shows how technical progress changed the Chinese landscape these last years. He offers the viewer a view of China both ancient and futuristic.
