Huang Yan is famous for his experimental art. He first began to mix traditional Chinese art with western contemporary art methods in the early 1990’s, his well -known Postal Art and rubbings of monuments slated for demolition are examples of this early work.
As early as 1994, he began to paint traditional landscapes on his face, and recorded these creations with photographs. This lead Huang Yan into the international art market and set him en route to become one of the most important conceptual photographers in China.
Eastlink has been working with Huang Yan from the very beginning, and has continuously promoted his photographs, ceramic works and oil paintings as well as other conceptual works.
This solo show will be the first in 2011 to see Huang Yan’s latest creations made in his brand new Shanghai studio. The exhibited works are all ink wash related, and have an appeal that is more than simply contemporary or experimental. They represent a new path Huang Yan has found to connect traditional ink wash with contemporary media.
There are totally 17 works in the show, covering a variety of new media for ink wash including installation works and ink wash on metal board and other materials. The exhibition witnesses the formation of a new phase for Huang Yan’s artistic career born out of his move to Shanghai.
