Lotus Vista - Part 2
by State-of-the-Arts Gallery
Location: State-of-the-Arts Gallery
Artist(s): LAM Tianxing
Date: 1 Feb - 28 Feb 2011

State-of-the-Arts Gallery is delighted to present our Chinese ink painting exhibition by the contemporary Chinese master Lam Tian Xing on 1st – 28th Feb, 2011, following his successful exhibition in January that received considerable media attention and positive response from viewers. This exhibition features Lam’s renowned Lotus series, in which he paints lotuses in various imaginative forms and expressive colors.

Lam has been enchanted by lotuses since childhood, as he used to live near a hill in Fuzhou known as the Lotus Peak. Over years, not only has Lam developed a particular passion for lotuses, he has also become familiar with the seasonal changes of this beautiful flower. Lotuses also symbolise the vitality of nature that Lam admires most. No matter how cold and harsh the winter weather is, lotuses can survive through it and wake up in spring. To Lam, the lotus is not only an example of nature’s beauty, but also a reminder of his home and Chinese culture.

Lam graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1990. Since then, he has been exploring different aspects of Chinese culture and integrating them into his works. His famous series included subjects like the New Territories, Tibet and lotuses. Lam breaks the convention by combining Chinese and Western painting styles, as he regards traditional Chinese paintings too conservative. Using Chinese ink painting as his base, Lam boldly adds on expressive brushstrokes and strong colors to achieve a rich, think and colorful composition. In this series, Lam paints his favourite lotus in all imaginable forms, showing viewers his interpretation of this elegant flower and his modern interpretation of Chinese ink paintings.
