State-of-the-Arts Gallery is delighted to present our first exhibition of 2011 ‘Figurative Painting: Not Art?’ on 4th Jan – 13th Feb, 2011, supported by State-of-the-Arts Foundation. The exhibition features the paintings of local painters from the Hong Kong Contemporary Artists Association, revolving around the theme of Hong Kong’s cultural and artistic evolution over years.

In this exhibition, some artists show their new interpretation of traditional Chinese culture, some depict the modern Hong Kong street scenery, some address present Hong Kong social phenomenon. Through their skillful painting techniques, they express their reflections on Hong Kong’s cultural and social changes, as well as their aspirations for the future of the city and her local art. Viewing their paintings is like unfolding the history of this fascinating city, understanding her memories and culture.

The Hong Kong Contemporary Artists Association (HKCAA) was established in 2009 by a group of passionate local painters to promote visual art in Hong Kong. It was formed in response to the growing popularity of using new media and the marginalization of painting in the art industry. Recently there have been voices criticizing figurative painting as conservative and out-dated. HKCAA hopes to remind both artists and audience that painting technique should not be forgotten or replaced, as it is not only the most direct artistic language, but also a tradition that should be celebrated. This is also the belief of State-of-the-Arts Foundation. State-of-the-Arts Foundation believes in the equal importance of artistic technique and creative concepts. It aims to provide support and platform for visual artists to realize their potential and communicate with audience and markets. It hopes to encourage interaction between local and international artists and raise awareness of the arts among Hong Kong youths through exhibitions, workshops, social events, gallery visits, contests, etc. Through these, we hope to create a more diverse art scene in Hong Kong.
