State-of-the-Arts Gallery brings an exhibition that has a little something for everyone. For this exhibition, Paul Lemmon’s subject matter is either elegant women painted in evening wear, or vintage cars on city streets. His exhibition ‘Mars and Venus,’ represents males and females, capturing the essence of his surroundings with his energetic brush strokes. This exhibition will take place from August 8th – September 21st 2011.
Paul Lemmon has exhibited in New York and all across London. He works from his own photography, acquired whilst soaking up the culture and colour of city life. This method is instrumental in achieving the overall seductive, cinematic, dynamism that he is looking for. Shooting ‘from the hip,’ utilising odd angles, severe cropping and incorrect exposures - often further manipulated later on - help obtain the effects that he is known for. Paul uses vigorous brushwork and vivid colours and contrast to heighten the energy and spontaneity of the captured moment.
Influences such as the painter Lucian Freud, the photographer William Eggleston and the 19th Century French writer Charles Baudelaire - with his descriptions of excursions through the Parisian bars and streets of his time - have helped shape Paul’s work, alongside the modern obsession with fly-on-the wall cinematography.
Paul’s primary aim is conveying mood and atmosphere rather than specifics. Ultimately he would like to immerse the viewer in his paintings, whilst allowing them to imagine their own characters and narratives in what they are seeing.
