NEW ART LAB is pleased to announce the opening of EMERGENCE BEYOND A COLOR, an exhibition of new paintings by LINDA LIAO. Please join us for the opening reception for the artist, Friday February 6th from 6pm to 9pm or during the run of the exhibition, which continues until the end of March, 2009.
EMERGENCE BEYOND A COLOR introduces a new series from LINDA LIAO, whose recent paintings contemplate the human condition via semi-figurative and abstract representation in vivid color. Drawing upon the conventions of traditional figurative painting, Liao adds a paradoxical twist, submerging iconic and symbolic human forms with her signature impasto technique into a sea of bold monochromatic fields whose intensity, upon initial viewing, nearly drown the subject completely, only then to find a glowing narrative illuminated beneath the shimmering surface of each piece. Through subtle reference and playful irony, she simultaneously questions and celebrates the confluence of body, mind, soul, psychology, sex and mass culture.
LINDA LIAO has exhibited in Paris, Kyoto, Ganzhou, and Hong Kong and has an upcoming show in London. Born in Guangxi, China, Liao has studied and lived in Australia, Paris and various cities of Europe prior to settling down in Hong Kong in 1995, where she currently conducts a figurative drawing studio.
