Wisdom of Tree
by 3812 Contemporary Art Projects
Location: Andy Hei Ltd., G/F 84 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
Artist(s): LIN Guocheng
Date: 1 Nov - 30 Nov 2013

Wisdom of Tree’ has its origin in a fundamental concept of ancient Confucianism: to acquire knowledge by probing into the world. ‘Wisdom of Tree’ emphasizes that by examining and studying concrete objects, in this case, trees, one can gain wisdom, conscience or even understand the underlying reason that rules the world.

The term ‘conscience’ was borrowed from Wang Yangming: to be proper and righteous in every aspect, so as to attain the state of a conscientious being.

Artist Lin Guocheng perceives trees as an ideal carrier of conscience, since they are the most powerful life form in nature which transcend time. Alive they provide shadows for human and shelters for animals; even after death they serve as firewood, building blocks and raw materials for manufacturing furniture. Always offering without asking for any reward, trees convey a sense of enchanting religious piety.

Passed on from ancient times, superior Ming and Qing wooden furniture had witnessed the development of Chinese history. With their subtle charm and aroma, their practical use had long been forsaken; rather, these exquisite pieces have become a unique carrier of Oriental aesthetics and religiousness.

Wisdom of Tree’ is an exhibition that embodies the significance of the inheritance of culture, as viewers could learn about the noble ambitions of ancient literati through the appreciation of Ming and Qing furniture pieces. Lin Guocheng’s pioneering technique of pen and Chinese ink weaves his emotions into the growing tree which thrives amid an expressive and natural landscape, echoing with the literati spirit imparted by traditional Chinese paintings and delving into its association with the happenings in our everyday life.
