Come together and give me a hand: Siu Sai Gual Bananale
by Woofer Ten
Location: Woofer Ten
Date: 18 Dec 2010 - 23 Jan 2011

WOOFER TEN is pleased to present “Come together and give me a hand”, the first Mini West Kowloon Biennial, featuring the participatory and social interactive works of its core members. For the past year, WOOFER TEN have been actively engaging the communities in the Yau Ma Tei area. The projects they instigated range from “Prize! Prize! Prize!”, the craftsman awards for those in the neighborhood, to “64 incidents”, to a revisiting of the 4th of June incident by local artists.

This Biennial is an exploration of strategies for inviting people to come together and raise communal awareness. These are achieved through:

1) highlighting a common cause. Cally Yu’s origami flower wall invites people to transform found posters on the street into trumpet flowers, the trumpet being a symbol of protest. Luke Ching’s West Kowloon Criminal District: Noah’s Ark is a conglomerate of floating objects donated by people;

2) activating a collective memory. Ah Gum will plant a time capsule underground in the 404 Shanghai Street space to be unearthed when WKCD launches. Lee Chun Fung will make a chocolate snack call the Dragon Scepter, cast in the shape of the power symbol once held by the Yau Ma Tei triad.

3) providing a service for neighbors. Law Man Lok will make a ad sign for Bing Kee Copperware, Chung Wai Yan will spend months painting the store gates of neighboring shops.

4) transmitting a personal point of view, Kwan Sheung Chi and Wong Wai Yin are inspired by prohibiting signs on the street (Post No Bills, No Smoking) to write poetry. They will also test, if not trap, people to reward them with a Good Citizen T-shirt…

Woofer Ten will also hold its annual open report to its public stakeholders, together with a forum “ Woofer Ten, All wrong “ discussing contemporary community art development in conjunction with the Mini West Kowloon Biennial. Stay tune for more detail on this upcoming January function.
