“Hong Kong Top Sights – Animal Walk”
by Woofer Ten
Location: Shanghai Street Artspace
Date: 9 Dec - 4 Dec 2008

Can maps provide, apart from information, room for imagination? In December, Ki Wong
and 29’s come together to stitch up an “imagination map” at the Shanghai Street Artspace. The
“Hong Kong Top Sights – Animal Walk” provides alternative options for those who want to explore
another side of Hong Kong high-rises scenario.

Ki Wong is neither a hiker nor a travel expert, but she longs to experience Hong Kong by means
of her legs, her eyes, and her curiosity. Undercurrents of wistfulness run through the most
works of art, which impact are larger than the “Lonely Planet”. This exhibition begins with a rare
thought: can maps be collection of texts, images and imagination?

Wong, picks out places with names related to animals in Chinese, calls up Katherine Chow for an
unique sightseeing with their cameras. Thereafter, come Chor and Ernest Chan, the members of
29s, spice the works with creative writings. Ki and her collaborators turn tripe into triumph by
making us understand the depth of the appeal of Hong Kong natural sites, not only to hikers, but
also to the people who dearly daily confined in the city. Same locations are now visualized and
textualized, and are fabricated into collages full of imaginations. Three stories are made into king
size books, 21inches wide and 28 inches height, hung on the huge white walls in the Shanghai
Street Artspace to illustrate their creativities. Outside in the display windows, a large rendering
of paths for more animal walks are explored for all walks. The replicas of display artworks are
made in pocket size for sold solely on premises.

Hong Kong Top Sights is the twelfth exhibition this year under the management of Four-zero-four.
Our artists, who make the Artspace becomes part of the community, share their views and
concerns to the society through arts and culture. The Shanghai Street Artspace will grow to
become a platform for ideas exchange for local artists and our community.
