Daydreamer No. 1/4 (2006) by DAI Dai
62 cm (Height)
Mixed media on fibre glass reinforced plastic

Inspired by the willowy figures painted by his wife Shuai Mei, Dai Dai’s sculptures have met with popular acclaim for their demure sensibility in form. The dainty form of his figures belies this artist's technical fortitude and refined aesthetic. Combining traditional method with his own personal vision; Dai Dai's chosen forms appear to drape over the unyielding matter of his choice of material. Wistful playfulness stares out with a woebegone beauty, and they are at once contemplative and beseeching. Dai Dai received his formal training at the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts and the sophistication of his technique in mixed media and the sculptural medium shines through with elegance.

“If we say the works are “classical” they actually incorporate a modern woman’s self-complacency and confidence; if we are saying these works are “modern”, they waft with an archaic breeze. These works fuse together the classical and the modern, creating a fashionable, utilitarian and poetic beauty. This is where the value in Dai Dai’s series lie…Even more challenging, he uses statuary to revive the long-forgotten essence of female grace and feminine virtues. These works restore a forgotten femininity and a lost humanity.” (Poetic Elegance and Heavenly Grace, Reading Dai Dai’s Female Sculptures, Zhang Zhao Hui, 2006)
