Spring (2007) by CHEN Li
100 x 90 cm
Oil on canvas

As the third sibling of the highly successful artistic Chen family, Chen Li is one of Schoeni’s youngest exclusive artists.  Chen Li has already been nominated as one of the Top 30 finalists of the Sovereign Art Fund Competition (2005, 2007), and his prodigious talent has met with prestigious accolades and prizes from the Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing; Guizhou Art Institute, Guizhou; National Art Fair of Graduate Students, Beijing and the National Military Museum, Beijing. Chen Li’s paintings often feature contemplative and captivating women against mysterious and even surrealistic settings, which confront his sense of the world around him. In his latest works, Chen continues to create imaginative and suggestive narratives within his almost poetically abstract figurative representations.

“Over the past few years, Chen Li’s sweeping panoramas of history and change have given way to a more personal view of people and places. Yet, even in this personal world, there remain hints of the chaotic and surreal nature of the world, as well as a deep sense of alienation, a feeling of lost souls waiting between worlds. The dark, almost menacing, tone of Chen Li’s narratives suggests that Chinese society is steeped in a pool of sadness where the individual finds it increasingly difficult to maintain relationships with others. His people are locked within themselves, unable to reach out to dispel the darkness within. But perhaps Chen Li is commenting on a universal condition that has permeated every modern industrial society.” - Faces, Dreams, Fictions, Excerpt from Asia Art News Magazine, September / October 2006 Issue, by Ian Findlay-Brown, 2006
