Odes
by Chambers Fine Art
Location: Chambers Fine Art
Artist(s): Taca SUI
Date: 2 Mar - 14 Apr 2013

Beijing Chambers Fine Art is pleased to announce Odes, the solo exhibition by Taca Sui. In May 2012 to June, Chambers Fine Art in New York organized Origins, a duo exhibition by Taca Sui and Cui Fei, featuring some of the works from the Odes series. This exhibition will be the first to present the complete series of works from Odes.

Taca was born in Qingdao in 1984, currently living and working between Beijing and New York. He was deeply inspired by the collection of poems, "The Book of Songs" from the Bronze Age, and since 2010 he began to create the photography series Odes. In preparation for the creation of the project, Taca spend a year studying the text of the "Book of Songs" and researching data. Based on the locations listed in " The Book of Songs", he planned personal visits to each of sites.

The artist did not intentionally try to record poetry, original context, imagery, or to step to the footsteps of many writers and scholars  to study "The Book of Songs". While visiting the locations, Taca freely uses a creative approach to understand "The Book of Songs", he does not imitate the collection of poems, but its expression.

The photography series of Odes, does not attempt to explain "The Book of Songs", but through another medium to echo the creative approach of the poetry. On the esoteric topic, Taca said: "I hope to build a stable and solid structure, the structure itself and the 'poetry' to form intertextuality in some levels, pushing literary significance to a distant and unfamiliar world. This will allow invisible and mysterious matters into reality, in order to analyze the template of countless possibilities."
