Artist(s): Farrokh MAHDAVI, Pouya PARSAMAGHAM, Arafeh RIAHI, Javad AZIMI, Shahrzad CHANGALVAEE, Iman RAAD
Date: 10 Sep - 11 Oct 2012

Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde is delighted to invite you to the preview of 'What Lies Beneath | Second Edition' on 10 September, from 7 – 9.30 pm in the presence of the artists.

An exhibition of emerging Iranian artists, featuring Arefeh Riahi, Iman Raad, Pouya Parsamagham, Farrokh Mahdavi, Javad Azimi and Shahrzad Changalvaee.

The exhibition is the sequel to last year's February show 'What Lies Beneath', which presented the work of six young Iranian artists fostered by the gallery's Rokni Haerizadeh. The second edition will reveal the development of Arefeh Riahi, Iman Raad, Pouya Parsamagham and Farrokh Mahdavi alongside two new talents, Javad Azimi and Shahrzad Changalvaee.

The show features photography, film, installation, painting and embroidery, it includes raw fleshy and sensitive depictions of the human body by Farrokh Mahdavi and delicate but loaded embroideries of flowers, presented in new, revealing scenarios by Arefeh Riahi. Pouya Parsamgham's never-ending film clips chasing running men agitate and compel us, while Sharhzad Chavangalaee's photographs of mountainscapes made from farsi expressions of sorrow and delight soothe us into nostalgia. Javad Azimi reveals his fascination with Iranian heritage through a series of paintings of sleeping women while Iman Raad continues his explorations of ancient folkloric values and modern rhetoric through complex and colorful embroideries. Although common heritage and cultural experience influence all of their works in varying degrees, the six participating artists reveal deeply personal and distinctive perspectives in strikingly wide-ranging artistic expressions.
