Butchers' Deluxe
by Contemporary by Angela Li
Location: Contemporary by Angela Li
Date: 27 Nov - 4 Dec 2010

The humble butchers’ lamp – something so ever present and integral to the wallpaper of everyday Hong Kong, most of us don’t even register its existence.

Johan & Jacob, a Hong Kong based design collective, are turning the spotlight back onto this unsung piece of the city’s heritage in a unique collaborative exhibition, ‘Butchers Deluxe’ to run concurrently with Business of Design Week (29th Nov - 4 Dec).

Inspired by this industrial classic, Johan & Jacob have approached some of the world’s brightest design talents, home-grown and imported, and challenged them to reinterpret this iconic lampshade, one of the few products still manufactured in Hong Kong.

Each designer has been given one shade (either red, traditionally used in wet markets and butchers, or white, which are used in pawn shops) and a month to put their own mark on this piece of Hong Kong street culture. The result will be a collective satellite exhibition where visitors will be given the chance to own a one-of-a-kind lighting piece, crafted by some of the worlds best design talents.

The lamps will be auctioned off and all profits from the event go to the charity foundation - Room To Read. (www.roomtoread.org)

The exhibition is free of charge and open for everyone to attend.
