Appropriating imagery from both traditional and popular culture, Lu Peng has over the years captured with clarity and precision the chaotic and bewildering transformations that have occurred following China’s meteoric rise. The show, entitled “Empty City”, drawn inspirations from the “Empty Fort Strategy” in the Chinese Thirty-Six Strategies. Lu Peng intends to use this title to challenge viewers to look beyond visual perceptions and see the substances that are underlying the surface. The works on view reflect the artist’s rich and complex meditation on traditions and cultural identity in modern China.
Born in 1967, Lu Peng was a native Beijinger and a child of Cultural Revolution. After graduating from Beijing Teachers Training College, he gained international recognition as a founding member of the ‘Three Travel Weary Loafers’ group with Wei Dong and Liang Changsheng in mid 1990s. Lu Peng is currently teaching at the Fine Arts Department of Beijing College of Education.
