China in China
by Plum Blossoms Gallery
Location: Plum Blossoms Gallery
Artist(s): Raymond FUNG
Date: 29 Mar - 18 Apr 2012

Plum Blossoms Gallery takes great pleasure in presenting “china in China”, Hong Kong artist Raymond Fung’s first one-person exhibition at the gallery. This show marks Fung's first gallery exhibition in Hong Kong since his acclaimed “Hong Kong Lyric: Ink Paintings by Raymond Fung” exhibition at HKU's University Museum and Art Gallery in 2010.

Raymond Fung’s mystical and atmospheric ink landscapes are rendered with discipline and structure, yet are free in spirit. A seasoned architectural designer, Fung has mastered the vital skill of dealing with space, as is evident in his paintings with carefully composed ink or color blocks that emphasize the contrasts of solid and void. In his latest ‘china in China’ series, Fung painted the mountains and waters with refined and exquisite brushstrokes, and introduced the tranquil chroma inspired by the ceramics of the Song dynasty (960-1279) into his works. The Song dynasty was the golden age of ceramics and the dynamic interplay of space and color in Fung’s paintings resonate with the wonderful pottery of that period.

Born in 1952 in Hong Kong, Raymond Fung is a renowned artist and architect. He was the recipient of the Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons award in 1990 and has won five HKIA Annual Awards. His works have been showcased in China’s National Art Exhibition, the Hong Kong Art Biennial and in the HKDA Asia Design Awards multiple times. In 2008, he received the Certificate of Commendation from HKSARG Home Affairs Bureau for his outstanding achievements in the promotion of arts and culture in Hong Kong.

Fung has exhibited extensively in New York, Paris, Avignon, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. His works are widely collected by international corporations and museums including the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the National Art Museum of China, the Shanghai Art Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the University Museum and Art Gallery, HKU and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

Fung is now the Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Architecture, Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Board Member of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, an Honorary Adviser of Art Museums in Hong Kong and a Member of the Advisory Committee on Revitalization of Historic Buildings. Fung has published over 150 articles and co-authored The Story of Space, A Century of HK Architecture, In Love with Architecture, and In Search of HK Art.
