Tiananmen (2009) by Eric LELEU
70 x 105 cm, 100 x 150 cm
Inkjet on Hahnemühle Paper

70 x 105 cm Edition of 8+2 AP, 100 x 150 cm Edition of 3 + 3 AP

Winning the Nikon Grand Prize during PHOTO Magazine’s Annual photography competition.

The international PHOTO contest 2009 attracted more than 50,000 entries, with applicants from over 70 countries .

These images was first shown during Eric’s solo exhibition in May of 2009 at ART LABOR Gallery in his show “BJ08 – Instants Décisifs”

This incredible series of 20 photos was created using what one might term an entirely new approach to the use of Photoshop techniques, building up the “perfect” crowd scenes of a photogenic city during its preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games. Editing and composing from over 4500 photos, he applied a meticulous structure, building up layers and personas, with accompanying shadows, all synched to the time of day and the angle of light, juxtaposing the action of individuals against the solidity and mass of the backdrop in brilliant colours. This is work composed on a pixel level, bit by tiny bit, built up into some of the most stunning photographs recording what was possibly the most important moment in recent Chinese history.
