Knutig
by H Gallery
Location: H Project Space, H Gallery
Artist(s): Ataphol SUJIRAPINYOKUL
Date: 7 Nov - 29 Dec 2013

H Project Space presents an installation by Ataphol Sujirapinyokul, a young artist from Thailand who works across genres of craft, design and installation.

Knutig is a Swedish term for gnarled. Ataphol works with banana tree fibers and other natural products to create forms derived from elements of nature. Using methods of knitting and knotting, the artist plays with the nostalgic aura of traditional crafts while introducing a contemporary sensibility in terms of scale and space. Understanding nostalgia as a recognition of loss, Ataphol’s woven structures are icons of time past, while also hinting at the artist’s interest in a Buddhist homage to time. Drawing on the materials and symbolism of nature with labor-intensive structures, Knutig is a meditation on life-processes from origin, growth and decline; and a revealing engagement with the practice of craft for the contemporary context.
