The first solo exhibition of Kim Shaan in Japan, “The betterfly effect”, is going to start from 14th of October at Showcase. Kim Shaan was born in Cairo, Egypt and graduated from Seoul Women’s University in Korea. Kim Shaan has become known as an emerging young female artist in Seoul through successful group and solo exhibitions.
Kim Shaan has grown up in both Western and Easter cultures and spent lots of her time observing people’s facial and behavioral differences in various places. Especially she is interested in people’s faces as they are the physical parts that describe the persons’ cultural backgrounds and philosophies the most. However in the recent time, the facial beauty is standardized and produced by media and advanced medical technologies.
Instead of following the temporal artificial beauties, Kim Shaan gives her iconic women in paintings the ideal aesthetic that do not expire forever. For “The butterfly effect”, she models her close family and friends and painted a series of faces in the same angles with different abstract backgrounds. Although the painted faces have the same features, each them have individual IDs indicating their own birth dates, names and nationalities as well as they have different colors of skins and hairs. These women figures are projections of diverse beauties in different eras, places and cultures as a chain reaction by Kim Shaan, and they are going to reach everyone’s hearts just like a butterfly effect.
