Mountains of the Mind
by Ode To Art Raffles City
Location: Ode to Art Raffles City
Artist(s): QIN Feng
Date: 11 Nov 2013 - 1 Feb 2014

Ode To Art presents Qin Feng's modern and abstract interpretation of Chinese ink painting, exploring his roots and reinventing this rich legacy in the search for a perfect alchemy.

Born in the harsh wastes of northern China in Xinjiang Autonomous Region in 1961, Qin Feng studied mural painting at the Shandong University of Art in the early eighties and was one of only two artists in the Province who radically experimented with imported styles of contemporary art during that period.

From 1996 to 1999 he taught at the Berlin University of Art while researching for a synthesis in his work of modernity and ink painting tradition before moving to America. He now lives in between Boston and Beijing where he has founded his own museum for avant-garde art from both China and the West.

Qin Feng reinvents his rich motherland legacy of ink painting into explosive contemporary compositions, trying to render it meaningful to the new generation of China, transcending the ages and the boundaries between modernity and tradition, East and West. The artist uses thick, large fast and dynamic brushstrokes to express his emotions and feelings, capturing raw energies.

Powerful, his large-scale paintings convey all his masculinity and vivacious remembrance of his country. His brushes are driven by banging thoughts and memory, instinctively, to create intense abstract landscapes.
