Gauguin’s works are full of vivid and intense color. His stylistic aesthetic transcended his time, exuding a poetic and tranquil melancholy. The exhibition is specially organized for this showing, consisting of more than 50 oil paintings, prints, works on paper, and bronze and wood sculptures on loan from more than 10 art museums, foundations and personal collectors in Europe, the United States and Japan. By showing the turning points and innovations in Gauguin’s various artistic styles, the exhibition brings forth the artist’s dramatic life.
At the same time, 25 pieces of artwork from sixteen artists in Brittany’s Pont-Aven School and Les Nabis group are also included in the exhibition. These artists were greatly influenced by Gauguin, and through the works of these disciples, one can better understand his impact and his contribution to Fauvism and Abstract Expressionism.
