Found / Memory / Aspect
by Take Ninagawa
Location: Miyanoura Gallery 6, Naoshima
Artist(s): Shinro OTAKE
Date: 27 Jun 2014 - 12 Jan 2015

The title of this exhibition, FOUND / MEMORY / ASPECT, refers to images that contain already existing fragments of memory.

Consisting of works made by Shinro Ohtake between 1988 and 1990 after he moved from Tokyo to Uwajima, the exhibition includes pieces assembled out of a variety of fragments including wooden scraps from boats that the artist collected himself, and a work from his Retina Series. While evoking the history contained in these materials, the works combine with each visitor’s inner memories to form a landscape of previously unknown memories.

In addition, objects imbued with a variety of memories on the road to the port such as the remnants of the pachinko parlor in front of Miyanoura Gallery 6, and signs for a barbecued beef restaurant and a Japanese-style inn will overlap to generate even more memories.

Visitors will intersect with the past and present of the island and scenes of memories from the area will be unconsciously mixed together as they emerge and remain in viewers’ minds. It is our hope that FOUND / MEMORY / ASPECT will provide visitors with this type of unique experience.
