The Aggregate and The Algorithm brings together a loose selection of artists and practices broadly engaged with the discourse of contemporary painting after the internet. While in the past 'painting' derived is power from a strict regime of the genealogical, today the inverse is true. The further a painted 'image' travels from its referent; the more distributed with a matrix of nodes it moves, the more powerful it becomes. Many works in The Aggregate and The Algorithm hover in a state of flux between figuration and abstraction, between the representational and concrete. While these hierarchies certainly hold in places, they're also compromised in others, complicating our collective visual field and reflecting new constellations of meaningful emoji.
