Life in Pictures
by 100ft. Park
Location: 100ft. Park
Artist(s): Max CHAN
Date: 16 Aug - 8 Sep 2013

On display is the creation of Max Chan between the year 2009 and 2013. Each set of works of emulsion transfer is a projection of a certain period in Chan’s lifetime. The five sets of works develop as a documentation of the journey of searching for his true self. Through personal documents and places where he lived, worked and travelled, Chan started collecting evidence from the reality that illustrated the meaning of the existence of “I”. Yet, the further he examined the external determinant, the more he was away from finding the intrinsic worth. When situating at a remote place and being away from the familiar, the estrangement surprisingly stimulated Chan to sense from within and review his understanding of “I” and life.

Either from an objective or subjective perspective, life is impermanent. Just as the scenery outside the train window or the reflection from the lake, perhaps it is instantaneous, or perhaps it has never changed.

Born and grew up in Hong Kong, Max Chan owns a multidisciplinary background. Apart from having a Diploma in Design (Advertising & Packaging), he graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University majoring in Cinema and Television and later obtained a Master of Arts degree in Cultural Management from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Chan worked in radio and television stations developing and organizing large-scaled productions. He is currently working as an art administrator.
