Hex.a.gon
by Taksu Bali
Location: Taksu Bali
Artist(s): Joanna CUTRI
Date: 21 Dec 2013 - 5 Jan 2014

TAKSU Bali presents Hex.a.gon, a solo exhibition by international artist Joanna Cutri. Joanna was intrigued and instantly drawn towards the hexagonal pattern in the domed ceiling of the classical architectural ruins in Hadrian’s Villa in Rome. The hexagon is one of the most ancient and magical universal symbols found in nature, architecture and literature used all around the world. The numerical aspect of the hexagon is the number six. Six symbolizes communication, interfacing, balance & union. Six represents harmony, sincerity, love and truth. The spiritual meaning of the number Six also deals with enlightenment; specifically “lighting” our path in areas we require spiritual and mental balance. Six beckon us to administer compassion and consciously choose forgiveness in a situation. Six is a symbol of perfect union, and the energetic emblem of soulful integration.

Within the cathartic process of her art-making lies the reflection of Joanna’s life. The canvas takes on a life of its own and the artists’ hand is merely the messenger. Spirit moves through the canvases. Every experience, thought, and emotion throughout her life surfaces in a complex, personal style marrying various mixed mediums and collage elements, resulting in layer upon layer of color, texture and imagery.

About the artist:

Joanna Cutri (b.1975, Los Angeles, CA) has an extensive visual arts background. Beginning at the Los Angeles High School for the Arts and continuing at the Cleveland Institute of Art as well as in Cortona, Italy. Joanna received her Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Georgia in 1998.

After graduation, her wanderlust lead her around the globe, influencing her art along the way. Joanna's exposure to different cultures and genres of art has greatly impacted how she creates and approaches her own work. Her complex, personal style combines various mixed media and collage elements, resulting in layer upon layer of color, texture and imagery.

She currently lives and works in Bali, Indonesia, where her vision of life and art are inspired by nature and the rich creative lifestyle of the Balinese. Joanna has had numerous exhibitions in South East Asia, Australia, South Africa, as well as in the United States of America.
