Youngson SUH biography | artworks | events

Suh Yongsun was born in 1950, Seoul, Korea. He received BFA and MFA at the Seoul National University. He started to be recognized after winning a prize at the first Korea Joongang Daily art competition and has been showing 30 solo exhibitions throughout his career. Currently he teaches painting at the Seoul National University. In 2001, he was invited to teach at the Hamburg Pentiment, Hamburg, Germay. In 2009, he was elected as the artist of the year at the museum of the contemporary art. Suh goes beyond commenting on the typical cultural difference in life; rather he finds commonality in ordinary lives all over the world. The dynamics of the facial expressions, the essence of human beings, and the history that came out of such natural and honest happenings in life are philosophically considered and studied in his artwork. He was first seen with his pine tree paintings in the early 1980s, however starting in the mid-1980s, he started to paint happenings in cities and comment on the history behind it. The complications and twisted human emotions all put in as remembrance of the happenings in his paintings. His use of colors increase the level of intensity in his work. The strong and bold colors shock the viewer visually before realizing its contents. Later on, his interest in capturing happenings in the city expended to understanding traditional customs, system, the border between two countries, production, and consumption that the human being create. With keen perspective, he makes every scene more ‘real.’
