Solo Exhibition by Heinz Mack
by ARNDT Singapore
Location: ARNDT Singapore
Artist(s): Heinz MACK
Date: 12 Sep - 2 Nov 2014

ARNDT SINGAPORE presents a solo exhibition of Heinz Mack, one of the most significant figures in German art and a founding member of the famous ZERO group. The show at ARNDT Singapore will be the artist's first individual exhibition in South East Asia and will commence with a talk by Prof. Uwe Fleckner, Professor of Human Sciences at University of Hamburg and Gerda Henkel Visiting Professor of German Studies at Stanford University, California.

Born in 1931 in Lollar, Germany, Heinz Mack studied Art at the National Academy of Arts, Düsseldorf and Philosophy at the University of Cologne. In 1956, together with Otto Piene and Günther Uecker, he founded the ZERO group which instantly gained international recognition with spectacular exhibitions worldwide. Together with fellow abstract artists, he represented Germany at the 35th Venice Biennale in 1970. Works by Heinz Mack and the ZERO group are considered one of the strongest artistic positions in post-war European art. Recent years brought numerous retrospective exhibitions and academic publications devoted to the ZERO movement and to Heinz Mack's artistic output.

The exhibition at ARNDT will cover all periods of Mack's artistic journey: from the ZERO period to the most recent works. The show will comprise of paintings, reliefs, sculpture, kinetic installations, works on paper and will serve as an hommage to his research within the field of abstract art and the role as a pioneer of op and kinetic art. Coinciding with the show at ARNDT is Heinz Mack's appearance at this year's Venice Biennale of Architecture; his The Sky Over Nine Columns is currently stationed in front of the church San Giorgio Maggiore. Also happening parallely to the Singapore presentation is a touring exhibition dedicated to the oeuvre of Heinz Mack and the ZERO group. "ZERO: Countdown to Tomorrow, 1950s-60s" will commence at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in October 2014. The exhibition will then travel to Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin (2015) and to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2016).

Heinz Mack, a member of Academy of the Arts in Berlin and a visiting professor in Osaka, Japan, was awarded the Grand Order of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany (2011). Heinz Mack's works have been shown in almost 300 monographic exhibitions and numerous group shows. His works remain in more than 100 major museums around the world. With the recent rediscovery of ZERO as one of the key movements in international post-war art, Heinz Mack's work is in the limelight of both institutional and private collections.

Heinz Mack currently lives and works in Mönchengladbach, Germany, and Ibiza, Spain.
