Visible Invisible
by Yumiko Chiba Viewing Room Shinjuku
Location: Yumiko Chiba Viewing Room
Artist(s): Nobuhiro NAKANISHI
Date: 22 Nov - 21 Dec 2013

Yumiko Chiba Associates is pleased to present Visible Invisible, an exhibition of new works by Nobuhiro Nakanishi. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 8 years, presenting mainly new ones from those series, Layer Drawing as well as Stripe Drawing.

Nobuhiro Nakanishi evokes a notion: to release his perception and to recognize something from different viewpoints which relate to time, space and body. Then he expresses by sculpture how something material and immaterial are related.

Nakanishi thinks that direct experience reflects the image and gives the reality for his works while he creates them, for example, feeling the temperature and humidity in the shooting site, feeling the purity of the air in the skin, recognizing texture of something by touch and walking around to capture the size of the site. He hopes that the artist’s touch on his work and the viewer’s reaction induced through the work would come across inside mutual bodies.

Artist Statemetn
I have been working, until now, on sculpture through various materials and technique with which I gained experiences to understand the space including time passage and to promote some physical experience in the viewers.
Stripe Drawing series are drawings made up with an endless number of free-hand lines. Their objects are, for example, reflection of filling lights enveloped in the forests and airborne water vapor seen in foggy sceneries, which you cannot grasp by hand in the real world. I could touch these objects by drawing free-hand with swaying lines while holding a space between each line. As those lines make some forms one time or unravel in the air at other times, I tried to draw a screen where borders, including the concept of outline and distance, mingle between object and its background, lines and their back space, and this side and the inner side.
This time I have made a drawing on a mirror, which goes beyond the surface and is linked with the other side; the alien world which reflects its scenery in the mirror and involves you.
The lines I draw on the mirror and myself in the alien world overlap and both could not be kept at the same time even if you tried. This movement keeps repeating here and there.
The idea of the drawing is something visible and invisible exist in one scenery simultaneously and they come across through bodies of the artist and the viewer as an experience.
