Artify Gallery is proud to present the solo exhibition of Hong Kong artist Elva Lai – “Sorry, it’s fragile” from 11 March to 30 April, 2015. The exhibition showcases Lai’s mixed media artwork series including photography depicting her personal memories of migration and separation.
Through her artworks, Lai narrates her own family’s migration journey in order to illustrate and investigate the migration history of Hong Kong. Lai believes that only by looking at the details of migration, memories and stories, we can discover and accept the complexity of Hong Kong’s unique history.
As the title of Lai’s solo exhibition suggests, migration results in separation, demolition and vulnerability. You can see her memory fragments by looking at her works, especially the artwork that Lai has experimented with her family portrait. By capturing her memory images, Lai is exploring the fragility of human existence as well as the futility of human beings in changes and destiny.
Elva Lai is an independent artist in Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor in Fine Arts at Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013 and is now studying Master of Fine arts at the school. Her work examines the instabilities inherent in the modality of photography and searches for new sensitivities of photographic representation. She was awarded the Hong Kong Human Rights Art Prize in 2013. Her artworks have been awarded and exhibited in various galleries and institutions in Hong Kong.
