Re-encounter
by Artify Gallery
Location: Artify Gallery
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 9 Dec 2014 - 17 Jan 2015

Hong Kong – Artify Gallery presents Re-encounter, a joint exhibition by local artists, reconstructing human connections through the lenses of contemporary and ancient icons. Featuring the works of Bambi Lam, Apple Wong and David Wong the exhibition runs from 9 December 2014 to 17 January 2015.

Bambi Lam - Bambi Ceiba: the Tree of Life

The Ceiba is an important symbol in Mayan culture oft denoted as the “Tree of Life”. The mythologies portray the Ceiba as a benevolent living structure, protecting and shielding the beings in the tree’s habitat. In the Bambi Ceiba series, Bambi Lam portrays newborn babies safeguarded by the majestic Ceiba trunk or the gentle Ceiba blossoms. Turning to distant and archaic ideologies, the artist reminds contemporary audiences of the forgotten and discarded nourishments that nature continues to bestow.

Apple Wong - In Between

The untenable nature of human relationships lies at the core of Apple Wong’s practice, Interrogating issues of objectivity and the limitations of empathy. Unable to fathom the thoughts of even our closest ones, we are bound to review relationships subjectively. Such discrepancy between the truth and subjective perception create an inevitable distance between human beings – a metaphorical space that the artist is keen to explore. In her work Spacebar, the artist depicts a figure disappearing into the distance, whilst a second figure hesitates to approach. The physical distance created in the installation confronts viewers with issues of the relational self and interpersonal constructions.

David Jasper Wong - Etching the origin

Having been through a painful departure with his life partner, David Wong seeks to reconstruct relationships in their crudest form. Utilising ancient etching and stencil technics, Wong creates the self portrait Head of a Young Man, No.2in an effort to make peace with himself, and Dog Man as a tribute to his loyal companion who walked him through the dark valley of life. Recalling moments of Love, Fear, Pain and Funk, the artist puts together a crossword puzzle that only speaks to those who have savoured life in its best and worst.
