KOKI ARTS is pleased to present Yoshishige Furukawa's solo exhibition, Paintings from the 1990's. This exhibition will showcase 9 paintings in various sizes from the 90's by Yoshishige Furukawa (1921-2008).
The 90's for Furukawa, who lived and exhibited in New York for 40 years, was an era when his paintings with color, which he had gone back to painting after the period of using black as a predominant color, reached its maturity. Attracted to the colors and to the balance of space created by the shapes in the canvas, Furukawa's obsession with texture can also be seen in the way the paint had been applied.
For Furukawa, the 1990's was also a time when he had many opportunities to exhibit in different cities. He continued to show at Condeso/Lawler Gallery in New York, and exhibited in other cities such as Chicago, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. (Washington National Airport) and London (e.g. the British Museum). In Japan, he had solo exhibitions held at museums and several galleries such as Gallery Yamaguchi in Tokyo and Gallery Oishi in Fukuoka.
This will be Yoshishige Furukawa's second posthumous solo exhibition at KOKI ARTS. A retrospective is currently being held at the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art until March 15.
