Location: YY9 Gallery
Artist(s): Jiwye TO
Date: 17 Jun - 30 Jul 2011

YY9 Gallery is pleased to present “Autumn Floods” – a solo exhibition of Jiwye To. In this exhibition, Jiwye creates a series of uninhabited and dream-like autumn landscape vision to allow viewers wandering in a space which is full of absolute freedom, non-action, pure thought, and carefree life to attain the spiritual freedom without any bondage. With the use of minimal color and plenty of empty spaces, Jiwye aimed to present audiences with the concept of emptiness. His paintings are full of the philosophy of Buddhism and Tao, making people free in mind.

Autumn Floods is obtained materials from the same name writings of Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi. He pointed out when we know the relativity of things we can attain absolute freedom by following nature with empty mind. The vast water and mountains will pull the view to the far deep, the atmosphere to the utmost silence and emptiness. The artist let the spectators experience and perceive the beauty in their own individual way to bring endless reverie and meditation.

About the artist: Jiwye To was born in Hong Kong in 1956. Since 1982 he has participated in numerous local and overseas exhibitions. His works are being collected by Shanghai Art Museum, Macau Urban Council Gallery, Canada Simon Fraser University, The University of Sydney and private collectors. From 1986 to 1989, To studied art and philosophy in Hong Kong Buddhist College. Over 3 years of studies, after constant study and research, a distinct direction and cultural concept — develop his art by starting from the integrity of Chinese culture — has gradually appeared in To's mind and works. The idea of Zen and Phenomenology become his view on life, the nature and elements of his art.

Opening reception with the artist on 16 June, 2011, Thursday 7-9pm
