Location: YY9 Gallery
Artist(s): Arthur Hin Ming CHAN, Ling LAI, Otto LI, Sunny TAM, James WONG
Date: 18 Dec 2009 - 9 Jan 2010

YY9 Gallery is pleased to present “Coexistence”, a group exhibition by Arthur Chan, James Wong, Ling Lai, Otto Li and Sunny Tam. This exhibition presents a series of paintings and sculpture of 5 local artists, who explore and present various concepts and perspectives of the coexistence of time and space through a deconstruction journey of the cityscape.

Arthur Chan’s sculpture creates a new perception of poetic space via the transformation and deconstruction of cityscape environment. James Wong’s pioneering works aim to feature the coexistence of first and final spatial images so as to explore the displacements of time and space on painting. Ling Lai’s paintings investigate the relationship between architectural forms and pictorial structures within a two dimensional format and its implications within an abstract context. Sunny Tam’s use of camouflage lines and shapes invites his audiences to create their own imagery of his painting. Otto Li presents a series of sculpture in QR code that creates an impact of illusion to the viewers.

About the artists:

Arthur Chan studied architecture in University of Hong Kong and received his Master of Fine Arts from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (Co-presented with Hong Kong Art School) in 2008. Arthur has engaged in a number of overseas and local exhibitions. Presently, he lives and works in Hong Kong/ Beijing, and is teaching sculpture at the Hong Kong Art School. James Wong is a foremost artist in Hong Kong who is interested in exploring new media in art. In 1982, his multi-media stage performance was highly applauded by the audiences. He was the co-curator of the first ever international video art exhibition in Hong Kong and the co-founder/chairman of Zuni Icosahedron which he named. His abstract painting was inspired by Gerhard Richter. Today, he extended his challenges into urban, social and political issues and turned his ideas to become new art form as well as sustainable solutions – his alternative contributions to the society.

Ling Lai graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts (RMIT) from the Hong Kong Art School in 2005 and 2009 respectively. She draws her inspirations from surrounding cityscape, architectures and construction sites. She had participated in a number of local group exhibitions.

Otto Li graduated at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Faculty of Fine Arts) in 2003. As a concept artist in a CG animation company, he is fascinated by the interaction that exists between the virtual space and the physical reality, which drives him to comment on the new ways of seeing both of the digital and material worlds, and to create an alternative version of the reality through his latest sculpture series, "Pixel", that translates computer pixel images into concrete tangible sculptures. He has been participated in various local exhibitions, with the recent ones include “Reborn – The Silk Road Arts Exhibition” (Hong Kong touring 2009), “Charming Experience - Hong Kong Art: Open Dialogue Exhibition series IV” (Hong Kong Museum of Art 2009) and “Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale Festival of Urbanism Architecture” (Central Police Station, Hong Kong 2008).

Sunny Tam graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (Co-presented with Hong Kong Art School) in 2005. His recent exhibitions include: “Minimum & Maximum” (YY9 Gallery 2007), “Squeeze” (UMA G 2007) and “Sunny Tam-Solo Exhibition” (The Gallery 2006).
