YY9 Gallery is pleased to present “Instinctive Light”, a solo exhibition by So Hing Keung. “Light” is intrinsic to photography. It shapes how images are formed on film or CCD the moment light comes into contact with these media. The photographic object turns into a multitude of beings and expresses different emotions as the light that shines on it changes. The photographer takes control of the light and changes it to suit his purpose, or acts as interpreter of light and expresses his feelings and insights through representing light as it is found on the spot. To So Hing Keung, it is the latter that he wants to achieve in this series of sensual images.
“Light illuminates and renders the matter being illuminated. But most importantly, I get to explore the mysticism and poetic existence of the object. I question yet view the world with hope, and experience joy as I go on this journey of discovery.”–So Hing Keung
The series of work on display is So Hing Keung’s bold and direct attempt to represent light in its crudest form. All of the works here are photographed with light as it is found. So Hing Keung did not alter the light, but rather, interpreted and represented it the way light and the object appealed to him. The photographs reflect So’s sensitivity towards the magical interaction between light and the object. They speak of many emotions, instill a sense of mysticism and poetic quality to otherwise mundane objects.
