YY9 Gallery is pleased to present “Dreamland”, a joint exhibition by Beverley Cheng and Michelle Kuen-Suet Fung. In the exhibition, the two artists incorporate both real and virtual visual effects, almost monochromatic colors and vivid compositions to present a number of artwork which reveal pieces of facetious narratives as well as the nature and animals.
Inspired by her childhood memory, Beverley’s new series of works aims to convey and depict a story with a sensational, poignant ending: a little girl who imagines herself a princess plays with the pigeons, then finds herself indulge in and being lost in such a relationship. With the use of simple lines and colors on canvas, these artworks act as a juxtaposition of everyday life of the artist, revealing her dark sense of humor and also creating a sensitive and vivid imagery.
Michelle’s drawing series “Into the Woods” depicts the branches of trees from tips to roots. The dry, rough tree trunks and the soft, translucent petals are communicated and expressed through some very refined lines of ink. Through her works, Michelle attempts to highlight the fleeting beauty of youthful maids, romantic blossoms and intricate butterflies. In the exhibition, there will also be three new paintings on wood which describe the interaction between a young girl and a prehistoric animal. The protagonist in these paintings is perhaps the artist herself, who tries to explore her relationship with animals and the oriental world.
